Description

Folios 577-578: Joshua Sydney Horton, Regulating Officer, Liverpool. Sends an enclosure which he received on 9 May from Mr N F Carder, Master and owner of HMS tender Betsy Caines, commanded by Lieutenant Clarributt, under Captain Horton's orders with copies of the order granting Mr Corder leave of absence. Lieutenant Clarributt refused to comply with the order on the grounds that Admiral Young would not grant leave to Mr Carder when the Betsy Caines was last at Plymouth; the Admiral probably preferring that the application was made to Captain Horton. Out of respect to Admiral Young, he feels he should explain his reason for granting the leave of absence, and approving Mr Stewart's taking charge of the tender as Master during the passage to and from Plymouth with Captain Colquitt's agreement. Subsequent representation from Lieutenant Clarributt to Captain Colquitt induced him to rescind the order to Mr Stewart. Captain Horton established that Mr Carder was not under any obligation to navigate the Betsy Caines himself, but was responsible for whoever he put in charge. Captain Horton then gave his order of 12 May to Lieutenant Clarributt to receive Mr N Eames as Acting Master. Further detailed description of the circumstances and dispute. Requests directions to Lieutenant Clarributt to grant Mr Carder 28 days leave, and to place Mr Eames as Acting Master during his absence.

Folios 579-579A: enclosure with folios 577-578: letter dated 9 May 1809 from Nathaniel Carder, Master and Contracting Officer, Liverpool, to Captain Horton. Requests leave of absence from the tender Betsy Caines for one month to attend to business affairs. Undertakes to appoint a fully qualified person to act in his place as Master of the tender during his absence. Providing Captain Horton and Captain Colquitt approve, he proposes Mr R Stewart, Master of HMS Princess, who has been a passenger on board, to act as Master during the passage to Plymouth. Mr Carder will join her there
