Description

Folios 562-563: Joshua Sydney Horton, Regulating Officer, Liverpool. Replying to the letter of 5 May. Edward Brown, born in Prescott, entered with Lieutenant Evans on 29 April as a Landsman Volunteer substitute for John Scott. He declared he was not an apprentice. John Sharrock, who claimed he was born in America, was pressed by Lieutenant Rees on 7 February as an Able Seaman. He produced a certificate signed by the Consul at Rotterdam. He was taken on information that he was born in Dublin, and had a very strong Irish accent. He later acknowledged that he was a native of Dublin. He returns the enclosures. He made an omission in last Saturday's report. The Betsy Caines tender arrived on 4 May and will be ready to sail for Plymouth with the supernumeraries on Wednesday 10 May, weather permitting.

Folio 564: enclosure with folios 562-563. Covering letter dated 3 May 1809 from Thomas Vaisey, 20 William Street, Liverpool, to the Admiralty.

Folios 565-566: enclosure with folio 564. Petition dated 3 May 1809 from Thomas Sharrock to The Admiralty. Petition for the release of his eldest son, John Sharrock, now on board the Salvador at Plymouth. Requests his discharge in exchange for 2 able-bodied Landsmen Volunteers.

Folios 567-568: enclosure with folios 562-563. Letter dated 3 May 1809 from William Ackers of Prescott to The Admiralty. Writing on behalf of the widowed mother of Edward Brown, currently on board HMS Princess. He and another young man apparently attended the Rendezvous in Liverpool as substitutes and received £13. He is apprentice to William Ackers, as can be seen from the enclosed indenture [not present]. He is very sorry for having volunteered and wishes to return to resume his work and to support his widowed mother and his sister who is on her death bed. Requests his discharge on as favourable terms as possible.
