Description

Folios 556-557: Joshua Sydney Horton, Regulating officer, Liverpool. Replying to the letter from M Barrow received yesterday, relating to Gilbert Howarden and Patrick Higgins. Their cases were referred by Admiral Sir Roger Curtis, as represented to him by Captain Irwin, Senior Officer of the Survey. The name of Gilbert Howarden does not appear o the books. A man named Peter Howarden, born in St Helens was sent to Lieutenant Rees's Rendezvous on 26 September by the Liverpool Magistrates as a Landsman Volunteer. He was not sent as a substitute. The name of Patrick Higgins does not appear in the books. John Higgins, born in Devonshire, was received on 28 February as a Landsman Volunteer, substitute for William Arstall. There was no apparent disorder. He was examined in Captain Horton's presence by the Surgeon, and he did not make a declaration, as sated by Captain Irwin, that he was subject to fits. It is impossible that he would have been accepted in those circumstances, or if there had been any external appearance of disease. In reply to the letter of 2 May, Richard Delahoyde, born in Cardigan, was pressed by Lieutenant Clarke on 27 April. he said he was mate of the Hopewell, but had not been on board for 7-8 days. he was pressed on shore at night. He returns the enclosure.

Folios 558-559: enclosure with folios 556-557. Letter dated 30 April 1809 from Henry Evans, c/o Mr Jones, 8 George's Dock Passage, Liverpool, to The Admiralty. Richard Delahoyde, Ordinary Seaman, was pressed on 28 April. He is a native of Aberystwyth. His friends are willing to obtain a substitute to allow his discharge to support his elderly mother, who has one son serving on HMS Namur and one on board HMS Dryad.
