Description

Folios 544-545: Joshua Sydney Horton, Regulating Officer, Liverpool. Replying to the letter of 1 May. Griffith Williams, born in Barmourh, was pressed by Lieutenant Clarke on 28 April as an Able Seaman. He said he was Mate of the Adventure, and was taken on shore at night, inebriated. Fisher Wilson, born in Cumberland, was pressed by Lieutenant Clarke on 2 May as an Ordinary Seaman. An indenture was produced to claim him, dated 11 February 1806, with the 6 altered to 7. The name of Thomas Williams does not appear on the books. It appears that John Williams, born in Wales, was pressed by Lieutenant Clarke on 11 April as an Ordinary Seaman. An indenture was produced to claim him with the date altered from January 1806 to October 1808. The case of George Owens was fully stated in the letter of 24 April, and the Admiralty reply dated 26 April directed Captain Horton to inform the man he would not be discharge on any terms. He returns the enclosures.

Folios 546-547: enclosure with folios 544-545. Letter dated 29 April 1809 from James Henry, Liverpool, to The Admiralty. He is the owner of the brig Adventure of Liverpool, which is ready to sail for Madeira. The Mate, Griffith Williams, was pressed at 5 minutes past 8 last night, just 5 minutes after the time allowed to be outside. An apprentice belonging to the vessel had been stopped by the Press Gang, for whom he had an affidavit made before the Mayor. Griffith Williams has a family and is not able to produce a substitute, but the Regulating Captain has indicated he might be released given the circumstances.

Folios 548-549: enclosure with folio 544. Covering letter dated 26 April 1809 from Mary Wilson, Seaton, near Workington, to the Admiralty, enclosing a petition for the release of her son, Fisher Wilson.

Folio 550: enclosure with folios 548-549. Petition dated 25 April 1809 from Mary Wilson, Seaton, Cumberland, to The Admiralty for the release of Fisher Wilson, apprentice to the brig Barbara of Workington, Master Adam Brown. He is only rated as an Ordinary seaman and Mary Wilson will produce a substitute for his release.

Folio 551: enclosure with folios 548-549. Certificate dated 25 April 1809 attesting the truth of the statements in the petition of Mary Wilson. Those signing the certificate confirm they know Mary and Fisher Wilson. Signed by Joseph Pearson, Minister of the Parish of Camerton, Cumberland, William Bennett, Churchwarden, and 11 other names.

Folios 552-553: enclosure with folios 544-545. Letter dated 29 April 1809 from Mary Williams, 2 Covent Garden, Water Street, Liverpool, to the Admiralty. The relatives of Thomas Williams, a youth pressed by some irregularity of his indenture, offer to find a substitute in his place.

Folios 554-555: enclosure with folios 544-545. Petition dated 30 April 1809 from John and M Owens, at the sign of The Peacock, Strand Street, Liverpool, to The Admiralty. Petition from the aged parents of George Owens. who has been pressed and is on board HMS Princess. he was pressed from the brig Jane of Drogheda, under orders to sail for Drogheda. The Master, Peter McConcky, has applied and enclosed the Protection from the brig on 19 April. No answer has been received. His aged parents beg for his discharge and will find a substitute in his place.
