Description

Folios 406-407: Joshua Sydney Horton, Regulating Officer, Liverpool. Replying to the letter of 23 March. John Berkley, born in Ireland, was pressed by Lieutenant Baly on 28 February as an Able Seaman. He said he was a Carpenter on board the brig Cornelia. George Nelson, born in Sunderland, was pressed by Lieutenant Evans on 19 March. He produced the enclosed certificate of discharge [not present]. He said the cause of his discharge was for venereal [disease]. The erasure and alteration in the certificate of the cause for discharge, and the Surgeon's report that there were no symptoms of the disorder, and that he was perfectly fit, led Captain Horton to believe that the certificate did not belong to him, or was fraudulently obtained. The case of Mr Pengelly has been re-investigated. He is more than ever convinced that he is an imposter. Mr Dalloway, the Surgeon, states that he has a fracture of the knee pan, but there is no contraction of the knee. He has been sent in HMS Pheasant to Plymouth to be re-examined, as there was no order from The Board to discharge him. He returns the enclosures. Also sends the weekly return of men raised in Liverpool [not present].

Folios 408-408A: enclosure with folios 406-407. Letter dated 20 March 1809 from John Barkley, [on board HMS Princess], Liverpool to The Admiralty. He is a native of Tyrone, Ireland. His elderly parents rely on him for support. He was pressed when going from Liverpool to London to look for work, there being no work in Ireland. He has never been to sea. Requests his discharge on as reasonable terms as possible.

Folios 409-410: enclosure with folios 406-40. Letter dated 21 March 1809 from George Nelson, 20 Argyle Street, Liverpool to the Admiralty. He was discharged from HMS Tribune as unfit on 15 August 1806, as shown by the enclosed certificate [not present]. He was pressed on 19 March. Requests his discharge.
