Folios 298-299: Joshua Sydney Horton, Regulating Officer, Liverpool. Replying to the letter of 23 February. Thomas Teasdale, born in Manchester, entered with Lieutenant Baly on 16 February as an Landsman volunteer. He said he came to Liverpool intending to go to sae but did not say he was an apprentice. John Gerrard, born in Cheshire, was pressed by Lieutenant Baly on 16 February as an Ordinary Seaman. He had formerly been protected for the Forrester flat belonging to Mr Dudley but was discharged from there some 6 months ago, and another man was protected in his place. He has not been protected since then for any other flat. Therefore, Vaisey's statement is incorrect. Luke Riley, born in Dublin, was pressed by Lieutenant Baly on 4 February. There was information that he was a deserter from Plymouth Hospital. He has confessed. It appears he was pressed by Lieutenant Keys on 1 September 1807 as an Ordinary Seaman and had insulted the Officer and Gang when doing their duty. John Jones, born in Holyhead, was pressed by Lieutenant Evans on 16 February as an Able seaman. He was taken on shore and had no documents. John Kelly was pressed by Lieutenant Evans on 13 February as an Ordinary Seaman from the Chester packet. He had no Protection. he had been discharged according to orders in July 1808 as having been employed in one of the 10 flats in the employ of Messrs Coffield and Co, who had found 2 quota Men to protect 20 men employed in the flats. Protection has now been issued for 18 men and 2 Masters sailing without Protection . captain Horton thought it was his duty to press him and requests further instructions. He also sends the weekly return of men raised at Liverpool [not present].
Folios 300-301: enclosure with folios 298-299. Undated letter from John Topham to the Admiralty. Sends the enclosed indenture [not present] relating to the apprentice Thomas Teasdale, recently deserted from his Master and pressed in Liverpool. Requests his discharge.
Folios 302-303: enclosure with folios 298-299. Petition dated 21 February 1809 from John Gerrard, of Winsford, Cheshire, sent from Liverpool, to The Admiralty. He is the eldest of 6 orphans and is the principal support of the family. He has regularly sailed in a Flat on the Weaver and Sanky Navigation and has never been to sea. He was pressed in Liverpool while on board a Flat called the Mary of Winsford with a cargo of salt. He had a Regular Navigation Protection for a Flat called the Forrester of Winsford, but has recently changed to the Mary and did not have an opportunity to get a new Protection. Requests his discharge, or at least on production of an able-bodied Landsman as a substitute.
Folio 304: enclosure with folios 302-303. Covering letter to folios 302-303, dated 21 February 1809 from Thomas Vaisey, 20 William Street, Liverpool, to The Admiralty.
Folios 305-306: enclosure with folios 298-299. Letter dated 20 February 1809 from John Molyneux, Liverpool, to The Admiralty. Writing on behalf of Luke Ryley, a labourer who was pressed a fortnight ago and is on board HMS Princess. He has never been to sea and has a family. Requests his discharge and wishes to know what substitutes will be required.
Folio 307: enclosure with folios 298-299. Letter dated 20 February 1809 from Daniel Jones, 1 James Street, Liverpool, to The Admiralty. Writing on behalf of John Jones, Mariner from Conas, Anglesey, who has been pressed. His elderly mother is dependent on his earnings and wishes to know the terms for his discharge.
