Description

Folios 255-256: Joshua Sydney Horton, Regulating Officer, Liverpool. Responds to the letter of 17 February. James Lomax, born in Salford, entered with Lieutenant Baly on 12 January and declared he was not an apprentice. Jacob Pagell said he was born in Koninsberg. He was pressed as an Able Seaman on 27 January. He produced a protection dated 12 February 1806 from New York, when he said he was born in the East Indies. No Consul appeared on his behalf, and information was given that he was a native of Jersey. Christian Lang, said to be a native of Prussia, was pressed by Lieutenant Clarke on 18 January. He produced the enclosed passport [not present] dated at Hull in 1804 for Christian Lang but did not match the description and nobody appeared on his behalf, leading Captain Horton to conclude that he was a British seaman with false documents. He appears to come from the North. William Davis, born in Frodsham, entered himself at Lieutenant Baly's Rendezvous on 8 February but later changed his mind. It appears that he arrived in the Ellen of Liverpool with the name of Thomas Morrison, and had his ship's notes and had received cash for them. He was pressed as an Ordinary Seaman. He held a Protection as Master of the Flatt Hampton, but had left that employment and was engaged for a foreign voyage in the Ellen. He appears to be a very loose character. William Yates, born in Liverpool, was pressed by Lieutenant Evans on 24 January as an Ordinary Seaman. He was said to be an apprentice to a Joiner, had been on several voyages, and was reported to have deserted from one of His Majesty's ships. He was then acting as Shipkeeper on the Ann. The application is made by J Earle and Co but Captain Horton could not prove it authentic. It appears that his cousin, Rick Yates, who was pressed last September, could be the deserter alluded to. The information money has not therefore been paid, pending further instructions. David Thomas, born in Wales, was pressed by Lieutenant Rees on 1 February as an Able Seaman. He arrived as Mate of the Britannia, but had left the ship and the owners make no claim over him. John Relph, born in Dublin, entered with Lieutenant Clarke on 6 February as a Landsman volunteer substitute for Anthony Fernandez. Richard Parry, born in Liverpool, was pressed by Lieutenant Baly on 14 February. He had been protected as a Rigger but left Liverpool and sailed in the Claude Scott to the West Indies and returned in the same vessel about 6 weeks ago. He was taken on shore, in a Public House. There was no information that he had been reported absent without leave at the time of the last muster of the Riggers.

Folios 257-258: enclosure with folios 255-256. Letter dated 14 February by John White, 32 Quay Street, Salford, Manchester, to The Admiralty. His apprentice, James Lomax. absented himself and went to Liverpool, where he was pressed and put on board HMS Princess. He was given 1 shilling entrance money after being pressed. He will be eternally grateful for the discharge of his apprentice.

Folios 258-259: enclosure with folios 255-256. Letter dated 11 February 1809 by Thomas Hallwood, Dukes Dock, Liverpool, to The Admiralty. Request for the discharge of William Davies, one of the trustees of the Duke of Bridgewater's Flatmen, who had Protection for the Flatt Hampton, which Captain Horton has deemed of no use as he had travelled on board a vessel called the Ellen. Asks whether substitutes will be accepted.

Folios 260-261: enclosure with folios 255-256. Letter dated 15 February 1809 by James Gerard, Mayor, Liverpool, to The Admiralty. Encloses an affidavit and a letter from Thomas and William Earle, Merchants, on behalf of William Yates.

Folios 262-263: enclosure with folios 260-261. Letter dated 14 February 1809 by Thomas and William Earle, Liverpool, to the Mayor of Liverpool. Set out the case for the discharge of William Yates.

Folios 264-265: enclosure with folios 262-263. Statement dated 26 January 1809 by Henry Yates, sworn before Thomas Golightly, Justice of the Peace, Liverpool. Sets out the circumstances of his son being pressed, and the reasons why he should be discharged.

Folios 266-267: enclosure with folios 255-256. Letter dated 15 February 1809 by David Thomas, on board HMS Princess, to The Admiralty. request for his discharge in exchange for substitutes.

Folios 268-269: enclosure with folios 255-256. Letter dated 14 February 1809 by John Relph, on board HMS Princess, to The Admiralty. Requests his discharge in exchange for on substitute.

Folios 270-271: enclosure with folios 255-256. Letter dated 15 February 1809 by J O Bole, Liverpool, to The Admiralty. Since the letter from the Admiralty dated 22 December relating to Lewis Pugh, who was pressed and on board HMS Salvador del Monde, he has heard that he is still on board. He made further enquiries, and understands that he was drafted to HMS Ville de Paris on 5 February. Requests his discharge at Liverpool as Mr Bole's vessel is due to sail to Greenland early next month. Also raises the case of Richard Parry, pressed in Liverpool and now on board the tender. Raises the issue of Protection for Greenland vessels ans asks for a response.
