Description

Folios 251-252: Joshua Sydney Horton, Regulating Officer, Liverpool. Responding to the letter of 15 February. Peter McCarty, born in Newry, was pressed by Lieutenant Evans on 3 February as an Ordinary Seaman. He had been at sea for 5 years, and served his time out of Liverpool. John Robinson, said to have been born in New York, was pressed by Lieutenant Clarke on 9 February. He was questioned in the presence of the American Deputy Consul. He did not match the description in the Protection, and the Consul agreed that it did not belong to him. He is evidently a West Indian Black. The name Andrew Engelson does not appear in the books, but a man calling himself Andrew Single, said to be born in Sweden, was pressed by Lieutenant Rees on 24 January as an Ordinary Seaman. He had no Protection, and information suggested that he was born in the Orkneys. He returns the enclosures [only one enclosure, relating to case 1, present] and sends the weekly report of men raised at Liverpool [not present].

Folios 253-254: enclosure with folios 251-252. Petition dated 13 February 1809 by Ann McCartey, c/o Dorothy Russel, 15 Andsell Street, Liverpool, to The Admiralty. Requests the release of her son, aged 16, the oldest of her 4 children, whose father died some 5 years ago. They are dependent on him. Undertakes to provide one able-bodied Landsman in his place.
