Description

Folios 172-173: Joshua Sydney Horton, Regulating Officer, Liverpool. Replying to the letter of 1 February. James Starkweather of Baltimore was pressed by Lieutenant Evans on 24 January on information that he was Irish and called Alexander Lane. The initials"AL" were marked on his left arm, and he was recognised to have lived in Crosley Street, Liverpool, some 10 years ago. The case of Robert Martin, alias Madden, was covered in the letter of 12 January. He had been Mate of the Winchester. His discharge was ordered by the letter of 14 January, on production of 2 able-bodied Landsmen as substitutes. John Jones of Devonshire was pressed by Lieutenant Rees on 27 December 1808. He said he was Mate of the Ringmore, and was taken at night, drinking in a public house. The letter of 11 January requested a report on Frederic Edward Kelly. As no such name appeared on the books at the Rendezvous, he referred the letter to Captain Colquitt of HMS Princess, and asked him to respond. Captain Horton has sent the letter of 2 February to Lieutenant Braddell on board HMS Princess and asked for an immediate response. Ann Porter, the wife of William Porter, who is on board HMS Iphigenia and for whom 2 substitutes have been received as per the enclosed certificate, against another person, has applied to have the expenses of raising substitutes returned to her. Requests an order is sent for his discharge from HMS Iphigenia so that he may return to his family.

Folio 174: enclosure with folios 172-173.Certificate dated 28 January 1809 issued by Sydney Horton, Regulating Officer, Liverpool, confirming 2 able-bodied Landsmen have been received for William Porter, currently on board HMS Iphigenia.

Folio 175: enclosure with folios 172-173. Letter dated 31 January 1809 by D Martin, Vicar, Leysdown, near Queenborough, Kent, to ? Captain Horton. Writing on behalf of his nephew, about whom he had previously petitioned 3 years ago, and who has now been pressed once again, in Liverpool. At the time 3 years ago he wrote a private letter to Lord Barham, being unacquainted with Lord Mulgrave or any other of their Lordships. Asks what steps are needed or what help can be given to obtain his nephew's release. A short while after he had been discharged from HMS Zealand he was shipwrecked. When he came home he was again pressed, but Admiral Rowley's duplicate certificate was effective in gaining his release and has protected him ever since until this third time.

Folio 177: enclosure with folio 175. Letter dated 31 January 1809 by D Martin, Vicar, Leysdown, near Queenborough, Kent, to the Admiralty. Petition for the release of his nephew Robert Martin, pressed in Liverpool. Mr Martin was a Navy Chaplain for 10 years. His nephew was first pressed in August 1805 by the gun brig HMS Censor. He came to The Nore an October and was on board HMS Zealand until 18 December, when he was discharged by order of The Admiralty to Admiral Rowley, he thinks as a result of his petition. The man is the main support of an aged father, a wife and children. He was pressed a second time in May 1806, when Admiral Rowley issued a duplicate as a result of a second petition, which has protected him until now. He has now been pressed a third time, in Liverpool. Requests his discharge in view of the needs of his family.

Folio 179: enclosure with folio 177. Certificate of discharge dated 18 December 1806 in the name of Robert Martin, HMS Zealand, The Nore, issued by Admiral Rowley, Sheerness, to Captain Ball, HMS Zealand. This duplicate was issued as the original was lost when Robert Martin was shipwrecked an the island of St Michel.
