Description

Folios 156-157: Joshua Sydney Horton, Regulating Officer, Liverpool. Responding to the letter of 30 January. Jonathan Richardson of Workington was pressed by Lieutenant Rees on 19 January. He was taken at night, on shore in a Public House. He stated he was Mate of the Leander. William Bowman of Liverpool entered with Lieutenant Baly on 27 November as a volunteer, Able Seaman and Sailmaker. He produced a certificate of discharge from HMS Donegal, without any description. He was examined by the surgeon who reported him fit for service. He then requested permission to enter for HMS Donegal. He returns the enclosures. Reports that 3 deserters were stopped by Lieutenant Evans on 2 January: William George, of HMS Africa, produced the enclosed leave ticket, with the date altered from January to February. A man calling himself George Palmer produced the enclosed leave ticket from HMS Standard, the dates also altered, but afterwards acknowledged that his name is Robert Mairnes, and he belongs to HMS Africa. Richard Roberts, from Wales, who was pressed from on board the packet Constitution, confessed that he belonged to HMS Thunderer and had outstayed his leave. He requested to be allowed the benefit of the Proclamation on deserters who surrender. A man named Matthew Thompson has been brought from Preston by a Sergeant of the Marines. He is a deserter from HMS Osprey. He will send the deserters to Plymouth to join their ships by the first available tender.

Folios 158-159: enclosure with folios 156-157. Letter dated 19 January 1809 by Jonathan Richardson, on board HMS Princess, Liverpool to The Admiralty. Requesting his discharge without the need to provide substitutes, as he is the sole provider for his orphaned siblings, his wife and children.

Folio 160: enclosure with folios 158-159. Leave ticket covering the dates 13 January to 27 February 1809 produced by Robert Mairns, who states he belongs to HMS Africa and received this from a woman at Chatham. The ticket is in the name of George Palmer, HMS Standard, for 13 January to 27 February 1809.

Folio 161: enclosure with folios 156-157. Leave ticket dated 22 January to 27 February 1809 for William George of HMS Africa.

Folios 162-163: enclosure with folios 156-157. Letter dated 28 January 1809 by William Bowman, c/o Mr Thompson, 27 Salt House Dock, Liverpool, to The Admiralty. States he was discharged from HMS Donegal at Haslar Hospital on 8 November 1808 as not fit for service. He has been pressed and is on board HMS Princess. Requests his discharge.
