Folios 137-138: Joshua Sydney Horton, Regulating Officer, Liverpool. Responding to the letter of 25 January. William Cole was pressed on 20 January by Lieutenant Clarke as an Able Seaman. He was said to have arrived in the Brother and claimed to be intended to be the Mate on the next voyage. He had no documents. He did not appear in the ship's articles, which listed Michael Robinson as Chief Mate, who appeared not to have been discharged. Samuel McGill was pressed by Lieutenant Evans on 13 January. He was born in Whitehaven and said he was the Mate of the Mary of Whitehaven. He was taken on shore more than half a mile from the vessel, at 9 o'clock at night. Samuel Baly entered with Lieutenant Clarke on 13 January as a Landsman Volunteer, substitute for Anthony Fernandez. He was born in Staffordshire and denied he was an apprentice. William Beavis was pressed by Lieutenant Evans on 23 January as an Ordinary Seaman. He was born in Dorset and said he had been at sea for upwards of 2 years. An indenture was produced to claim him, dated 25 January 1808, but it appeared he had been at sea more than a year before that date, and he was not believed. James Wallace was pressed by Lieutenant Evans on 19 January. He said he was born in America, but was taken on information that he was a native of Wexford. He does not match the description on the Protection. He was questioned in the presence of the American Consul's Deputy, who agreed that the Protection did not belong to him. His friend agreed that he was a native of Wexford, and undertook to provide two substitutes for his discharge.
