Folios 131-132: Joshua Sydney Horton, Regulating Officer, Liverpool. Replying to the letter of 24 January regarding Antonio Samuel, who was pressed by Lieutenant Clarke on 14 January. He is said to have been born in the West Indies. He is a black man with no Protection. He first claimed to be Portugese, and then a native of China. Mr Souza, the Portugese Consul (unknown to Captain Horton until now) has never seen the man previously, and knows nothing about him. A woman with whom he lodged informed the Consul that the man was Portugese. He returns the enclosure.
Folios 133-134: enclosure with folios 131-132. Lletter dated 21 January 1809 by Diego Antonio le Jerez Souza, Portugese Consul, Liverpool, to the Admiralty. A Portugese subject named Antonio Manuel was pressed on 14 January and is now on board HMS Princess. Requests his discharge.
