Description

Folios 125-126: Joshua Sydney Horton, Regulating Officer, Liverpool. Replying to the letter of 23 January. George Gillespie was pressed by Lieutenant Clarke on 30 December, born in Ayrshire. He said he was Mate of the Francis, but had no certificate or documents to prove this. He was taken on shore at 9 o'clock at night. John Jones does not appear on the books at the Rendezvous. The letter and enclosure about him has been forwarded to HMS Princess with a request for the officer to respond. He returns the enclosures.

Folios 127-128: enclosure with folios 125-126. Letter dated 16 January 1809 by G Wardell, 5 West Square, Lambeth to The Admiralty. Requests a response to the enclosed.

Folios 129-130: enclosure with folios 127-128. Letter dated 14 January 1809 by Frank O'Neill and Sons, Liverpool, to the Admiralty. Friends of George Gillespie, Private Seaman, have requested a letter about the man, who was pressed on the evening of 31 December and is now onboard HMS Princess. He has a wife and 3 children to support, who will be reduced to poverty by his continued detention. Requests his discharge on production of a substitute.
