Folios 114-115: Joshua Sydney Horton, Regulating Officer, Liverpool. Responding to the letter of 20 January. A man calling himself John Francis was pressed by Lieutenant Evans on 11 January as an Able Seaman, born in Jersey. He produced an affidavit of John Francis, a native of Malaga, witnessed by I Ludlow, dated last June, which did not match his description. He said he had not been to Liverpool for 7 years. He could speak fluent French, but not Spanish. Later, a woman appeared at the Rendezvous claiming he was called Francis Vaughan, alias Waln, but produced no documents. James Belford was pressed by Lieutenant Evans on 13 January as an Able Seaman, born in Ireland, he came as a Boatswain in the Alexander from Demarara, and is said to have deserted from HMS Fisgard, He was reported fit by the Surgeon. William Towers was pressed by Lieutenant Clarke on 9 January as an Ordinary Seaman and Sailmaker, born in Liverpool. He was apprehended because of his violent conduct in trying to rescue a pressed man named Benjamin Mitchell, alias James Edwards, when being transported to HMS Princess. He returns the enclosures.
Folios 116-117: enclosure with folios 114-115. Letter dated 19 January 1809 by Francis Waln, on board HMS Princess, Liverpool. Petition for his discharge, on the grounds of being Spanish. He was taken from his lodgings by a press gang. He has no Consul or friends to act on his behalf.
Folio 118: enclosure with folios 116-117. William Mainwaring, 31 Mersey Street, Liverpool, to the Admiralty, 18 January 1809. He has been requested by a late lodger to forward the enclosed petition to The Admiralty.
Folio 119: enclosure with folios 116-117. Statement by John Bernanado dated 18 January 1809, sworn before Thomas Golightly, Justice of the Peace, Liverpool. He is a native of Spain and states that he has known Francis Waln, currently on board HMS Princess, from early childhood . Francis Waln is a native of Spain and is thus protected. He has previously been discharged from His Majesty's Service because he is Spanish.
Folios 121-122: enclosure with folios 114-115. Letter dated 19 January 1809 by Elizabeth Belford, c/o Mr Robinson, 22 Lower Frederick Street, Liverpool, to the Admiralty. Her husband, James Belford, was pressed last week and is on board HMS Princess. He has a wife and 3 children to support. She is in poor health, and will be sent to the workhouse. Her husband had a previous head injury. Requests his discharge.
Folios 123-124: enclosure with folios 114-115. Letter dated 19 January 1809 by Henry Willay, Sparling Street, Liverpool, to the Admiralty. An apprentice of his called William Towers was pressed. He has never been away from his Master. My Willay needs his help for his business. Requests his discharge.
