Folios 108-109: Joshua Sydney Horton, Regulating Officer, Liverpool. Responding to the letter of 16 January. Thomas Porter was pressed by Lieutenant Evans on 13 January as an Able Seaman. He admitted he was a deserter from HMS Aquilon, having left her about 3 months ago while on leave at Sheerness. He was to have returned to HMS Cornelia. He has requested a pardon offered to deserters surrendering themselves. James Hall offered himself to Lieutenant Evans as a Landsman Volunteer and Smith as substitute for Joseph Hall. He was perfectly sober at the time. John Hall was pressed by Lieutenant Evans on 13 January as an Able Seaman. He claimed to be American and had no Protection, but the enclosed Protection [not present], which does not match his description, was produced to claim him. When taken he was believed to be a native of Wexford and his name was Nathaniel Kehoe. The initials NK were marked on his right arm and he is clearly Irish. Jacob Thompson was pressed by Lieutenant Evans on 12 January as an Able Seaman, born in Jamaica. The enclosed document was produced to claim him. He was questioned in the presence of the American Consul's Deputy. His age did not match that in the document and it was concluded that he was not the same person. Benjamin Mitchell, as reported in the letter of 16 January, was pressed by Lieutenant Rees on 8 January as an Able Seaman. He does not answer the description in the Protection. He confessed his real name was James Edwards. He has since applied in that name to be discharged on production of substitutes, but the request was refused by The Admiralty. Sends the weekly report of men raised at Liverpool [not present].
Folios 110-111: enclosure with folios 108-109. Letter dated 16 January 1809 by Mary Porter, 13 Brick Street, Liverpool, to The Admiralty. Her husband, Thomas Porter, was given leave about 10 weeks ago by the Captain of HMS Goelan to see his family for a few days. He overstayed his time due to illness and was persuaded by his wife not to return to his ship. His anxiety about this led him to give himself up to Captain Horton. Mary Porter has 4 children of her own, plus an orphan, to support, and long-term illness, and requests her husband's discharge. She promises to raise Landsmen in his place.
Folios 112-113: enclosure with folios 108-109. Letter dated 16 January 1809 by Ann Hall, Bolton, to The Admiralty. Requests the discharge of her husband, James Hall, who was pressed while searching for work in Liverpool and under the influence of alcohol. He has never been to sea and has a weak constitution. She will find substitutes.
Folio 113: enclosure with folios 108-109. Certificate issued by John Wilson, Minister, and William Cocker and Thomas Howell, Church Wardens, parish of Bolton, stating that James Hall and his wife have lived in the parish many years and have 5 young children.
