Folios 73-74: Joshua Sydney Horton, Regulating Officer, Liverpool. Replying to the letter of 11 January. The name of James Derbyshire is not in his books, but it appears that James Cross entered with Lieutenant Evans on 31 October [1808] as a Landsman volunteer, substitute for Samuel Houston. He was born at Derby Chapel and declared he was not an apprentice. William Boyd entered with Lieutenant Rees on 17 December as a Boy volunteer, born in Bolton and declared he was not an apprentice. He returns the enclosures. Also sends the weekly returns of men raised at Liverpool [not present]. HMS Betsy Caines tender has sailed today for Plymouth with 89 supernumeraries.
Folios 75-76: enclosure with folios 73-74. Letter dated 9 January 1809 by George Boyd, Bolton le Moors, to the Admiralty. He forwarded a petition in respect of his son age 12, William Boyd, on 24 December. It was signed by the Minister and Church Wardens and stated the case for the discharge of his son. He has not has a response but has heard that a draft was despatched from HMS Princess during the recent bad weather and all on board had perished. Wishes to know whether his son is still on board HMS Princess and how he might procure his discharge.
Folio 76: enclosure with folios 73-74. Certificate dated 9 January 1809, issued by Thomas Bancroft, Minister, andf William Cocker and Thomas Howill, Church Wardens, of the parish of Bolton le Moors. Confirm that William Boyd was baptized in the parish.
Folios 77-78: enclosure with folios 73-74. Letter dated 9 January 1809 by J D Buchan, Change Alley, Liverpool, to The Admiralty. On the direction of W Aned, on behalf of William Westmore, sends the enclosed documentation to obtain the release of James Derbyshire, recently entered on board HMS Princess.
Folios 79-80: enclosure with folios 77-78. Statement dated 7 November 1808 by William Westmore, Liverpool. Statement sworn before Thomas Golightly, Justice of the Peace, Liverpool confirming that James Derbyshire, recently entered as a Seaman on board HMS Princess under the name James Cross, is the true and lawful apprentice as a joiner for the term of 4 years from 6 September 1806.
