Description

Folios 69-70: Joshua Sydney Horton, Regulating Officer, Liverpool. Replying to the letter of 10 January. Robert Madden was pressed by Lieutenant Evans on 5 January. He was born in Ayr. He was taken when walking along Salthouse Dock. He said he was Mate of the Winchester and produced a certificate of his giving bond as Mate for a voyage to Portland dated 12 March 1807. Lieutenant Evans was with the gang at the time. He had produced no bond to perform the present voyage to St Johns, nor has any been given, on examination at the Custom House, since the voyage to Portland. The Winchester has not sailed during that period, as it has been under repair. He returns the enclosures. HMS Betsy Caines tender has been prevented from leaving by adverse winds.

Folios 71-72: enclosure with folios 69-70. Letter dated 8 January 1808 by Robins Cooke, owner of the Winchester, Liverpool, to the Admiralty. Description of the circumstances of the pressing of Robert Martin. Requests his discharge.
