Description

Folios 62-63: Joshua Sydney Horton, Regulating Officer, Liverpool. Replying to the letter of 9 January. Redmund Rush was pressed by Lieutenant Rees on 19 December as an Able Seaman and Shipwright. He said he was going out as a Carpenter and has been at sea for several years. Donald Nicholson was pressed by Lieutenant Clarke on 27 [December] as an Able seaman, born on the Isle of Skye. He said he was Mate of the sloop Jane, but was taken at night on shore. He returns the enclosures.

Folios 64-65: enclosure with folios 62-63.Letter dated 26 December 1808 by Mary Wilebridge, c/o Mr Milburn, 6 Pitt Street, Liverpool, to The Admiralty. Redman Rush was forced to leave his occupation of fishing in Galway to travel to Liverpool to better himself. His mother and family are in great distress and request his discharge on providing a Landsman or two in his place.

Folios 66-67: enclosure with folios 62-63. Letter dated 7 January 1809 by James Maddock, Liverpool, to The Admiralty. Encloses Captain Horton's certificate confirming that he has delivered an able-bodied Landsman in place of William Cookson, now on board HMS Scorpion. Also makes a case for Daniel (alias Donald) Nicholson, Mate of the sloop Jane, who was pressed on the evening of 29 December. Sets out the circumstances. He has a wife and 7 small children, one of whom is a cripple. Requests his discharge.

Folio 68: enclosure with folio 66. Certificate dated 25 November 1808 issued by Sydney Horton, Regulating Officer, Liverpool, confirming that he has received an able-bodied Landsman as substitute for William Cookson.
