Folios 51-52: Joshua Sydney Horton, Regulating Officer, Liverpool. Responding to the letter of 6 January. Robinson Wilson, born in Shields, was pressed by Lieutenant Rees on 28 October [1808]. He produced a certificate for the discharge of Rodney Wilson dated May 1798, which did not belong to him. Joseph Morn, born in Gibraltar, was pressed by Lieutenant Rees on 30 December as an Ordinary Seaman. In Captain Horton's opinion the affidavit was not made by, or intended for, this man. The crimps in Liverpool who keep sailor lodgers have a large number of affidavits in their possession and produce them on behalf of any pressed man. Captain Horton views them all with suspicion as they are easily obtained. In this case, the man knew nothing about the place or the language of the people where he was said to be born and is obviously a British subject and a very serviceable man. Thomas Drumgoole entered with Lieutenant Evans on 24 November [1808] as a Landsman volunteer, substitute for James Kavenagh. John Oldis was pressed by Lieutenant Evans on 3 January. The circumstances in the application are nearly the same as related at the time of his examination; he (although the owner) sailing in the vessel rendered himself liable to be pressed. He returns the enclosures. The Betsy Cains tender has sailed this morning for Plymouth, with 90 supernumeraries on board.
Folios 53-54: enclosure with folios 51-52. Letter dated 2 January 1809 by Robinson Wilson, HMS Princess, Liverpool, to the Admiralty. Writing again, as he believes his previous letter may have been overlooked. Had reported his poor health and the distress of his friends. Requests his discharge without the need to provide substitutes.
Folios 55-56: enclosure with folios 51-52.Letter dated 4 January 1809 by Ann Magson, 12 Crosbie Street, Liverpool, to The Admiralty. Request for the discharge of Joseph Mont, an Italian Seaman on board the Betsy Cain tender. He is a boarder of Ann Magson who has been pressed. She sends the enclosed Protection.
Folio 57: enclosure with folios 55-56. Protection dated 30 December 1808 sworn before Thomas Golightly, Justice of the Peace, Liverpool, testifying that Joseph Mont is exempt from pressing, as he was born, and is a citizen of, Naples.
Folios 58-59: enclosure with folios 51-52. Letter dated 4 January 1809 by Thomas Drumgoole, on board HMS Princess, Liverpool, to The Admiralty. Petition for his release on obtaining one able-bodied Landsman as a substitute.
Folios 60-61: enclosure with folios 51-52.Letter dated 4 January 1809 by Ellis and McNeill, Liverpool, to The Admiralty. Request for the discharge of John Oldis, of Poole, Dorset, who has been pressed. He is the Master and owner of a ship.
