Description

Folios 27-28: Joshua Sydney Horton, Regulating Officer, Liverpool. Replies to the letter of 2 January. James Williams was pressed by Lieutenant Evans on 27 [December] as an Able Seaman. He said he was born in America. He was taken from a crimp house and had no Protection, said he belonged to the brig Liberty of Liverpool, then in the river. The letter of 26 [December] directed the discharge of Anthony Fernandez on the production of 2 Able Landsmen or 1 Seaman as substitutes. The case of Manuel Anthony was stated in the letter of 17 [December], with an enclosed affidavit made by himself and a notorious crimp named Anthony Rimmer, who has long been in the habit of procuring affidavits and in this instance swore that Manuel Anthony was a native of Portugal, though he acknowledged this was the first time he had been to Liverpool, or to have seen Anthony Rimmer. He was pressed by Lieutenant Clarke on 14 November [1808] as an Ordinary Seaman. He claims to be a native of Jersey, having belonged to the Ceres, then to the Providence and this port. Notes that he has not had any instructions with respect to Anthony Rimmer for issuing and procuring false Protections, as stated in the letter of 17 December. With regard to J Poindestree, who signed the application, he has no comments as he does not belong to Liverpool. He states his address is Union Court, Broad Street. The order contained in the letter of 27 December to discharge James Spence, as 2 substitutes have been received by Rear Admiral Sir Edmund Nagle, has been sent to HMS Princess. Captain Colquitt has reported that he was discharged to HMS Scorpion on 8 November 1808, to be dealt with by the Commander In Chief at Plymouth.

Folios 29-30: enclosure with folios 27-28. Letter dated 24 December 1808 from J Poigndestre, Union Court, Broad Street, to The Admiralty. States that Anthony Fernandez and Manuel Antoine have been pressed at Liverpool from a vessel lying there belonging to Jersey and taken to HMS Princess. Anthony Fernandez was only an Ordinary Seaman on board the vessel he was pressed from, and Manuel Antoine is a boy. Requests their discharge in exchange for 2 Ordinary Seamen or 3 Landsmen.
