Folios 230-231: John Hayes, HMS Alfred. Spithead. He responds to a request from the Admiralty to complete a form he has submitted, specifically the section asking when and where he parted from the convoy. He points out that he did so in a letter he sent to the Admiralty when he reported that HMS Hindostan and 5 transports parted from him during a gale off The Lizard. The rest parted from him in a bad storm between Portland and the Isle of Wight. During this period the weather was so foggy it was impossible to tell one ship from another or even to tell a ship from a brig. On that basis all he can say is that they parted company on 29th and 30th and he knows some arrived at Falmouth, some at Plymouth and some at Spithead and so he hopes that all arrived safely.
