Description

Folios 227-228: Sydney Horton, Regulating Officer, Liverpool. James Jones, born Liverpool, impressed by Lieutenant Clarke 11th December, is a Waterman for Mr Perry but had never had protection. William Johnson, born Cheshire, impressed Lieutenant Evans on 22nd December from the Runcorn packet with no protection apart from discharge from July 1807 for the Northwood Flatt. All the protections have been issued to the Duke of Bridgewater and they are all employed. There are others sailing for him without protection. Johnson, when in the boat going to HMS Princess, tried to persuade the other impressed men to throw Lieutenant Evans overboard. Henry Roberts, born Wales, impressed by Lieutenant Rees, says he is a Surgeon. The Betsy Cairns tender cannot leave because of the measels raging abord HMS Princess.

Folios 229-230: enclosure with folios 227-228. Letter dated 25 December 1808 by Margaret Jones, Lime Court, Crosby. Asks for her husband James Jones to be released as he has helpless children and he has never been at sea.

Folios 231-232: enclosure with folios 227-228. Thomas Poulson, Coutts Dock. William Johnson was taken from Mr Bradshaw's packet from the Duke of Bridgewater between Runcorn and Liverpool. Poulson has six protections issued to the Duke of Bridgewater any one of which could have been given to William Johnson if he had appllied but he relied on the discharge from Captain Welby of HMS Salvadordel Monde in 1807. He was released from the press a year ago. He should be released now if he can find a substitute.

Folios 233-234: enclosure with folios 227-228. Letter dated 27 December 1808 by Richard Riley asks for an enquiry on behalf of Lord Berkley about Sir Robert Williams.

Folio 235: enclosure with folios 227-228. Letter dated 22 December 1808 by Lord Berkley, Stanhope Street, London, asks if anything can be done about Sir Robert Williams' letter.

Folios 236-237: enclosure with folios 227-228. Letter dated 10 December 1808 by Robert Isaac Robert, Surgeon, Fronhanlog, near Gystwellyn, to Sir Robert Williams, Anglesea. He hopes for help as his brother, John Roberts of Caryrcors is a tenant of Williams. His son, Henry Roberts was a Surgeon on the Diana brig bound for the West Indies but was impressed in Liverpool and is now on HMS Princess. He asks for Williams to intercede.
