Description

Folios 161-162: Sydney Horton, Regulating Officer, Liverpool. In reply to Captain Charlton, North Shields, Edward Powell, born in Flintshire, was impressed by Lieutenant Evans, and was employed on the Eastham boat but was released by the Admiralty as he was not a hand. The owners of these boats have not followed the orders for the Quota and continue to employ men without protection. Edward Powell abused |Officers so he felt it was his duty to impress him. Cornelius Samuelson was impressed by Lieutenant Rees, was born in Norway but is married in this town. He offered to discharge him as a foreigner if he was given a substitute but this has not happened. Thomas Guile was employed on a mailboat but was disatisfied with it and has behaved in a riotous manner to Officers here. The owners of the passage boats will not apply for protection and use loose hands as and when needed so he thought Guile was a subject for impressment.
