Description

Folios 641-642: Thomas [Hannaford] Hurd, London. On his finish of the Bermuda survey and on delivery of his charts, he was allowed the pay of the different Sloops of War he Commanded while carrying on that service in addition to the survey pay originally assigned him as a Lieutenant. In the same year 1795 he was directed by the Board to superintend the building and fitting of the Sloops of war the Navy Board had just contracted for to be built in those Islands. It was therefore judged proper by the late Admiral Murray who then commanded that station that his pendant should be shifted from one ship to another as they came forward and as best suited the convenience of the service. By this manner he was first appointed to the command of HMS Bermuda then to HMS Rover and lastly to HMS Driver all of which vessels from the nature and situation of the Bermudas at that period, were obliged to be fitted in a very irregular manner. The Pay for HMS Driver and HMS Bermuda is received but a few officers and men belonging to HMS Rover were Victualled on board a prison ship which served as a hulk, but it appears the Purser purchased provisions to the amount of fifty five pounds for which he drew on the Victualling board and at the himself the Master and some few men were borne on board yet no sloop or muster books are in the office, a Boatswain and Carpenter were also appointed but no naval stores were received; the Purser the Boatswain and Carpenter were totally ignorant of the service and he understands have never passed their accounts and not now to be found or heard of. He request the full pay for when he commanded HMS Rover from 17 February 1796 to 16 September 1796.
