Folios 596-597: William Hughes, HMS Cormorant. Reply to letter received from Rear Admiral Sir Isaac Coffin Bart, stating the surprise at the defects of the ship after having been but six weeks at sea. He informs that he received his orders to proceed to Spithead, immediately on having taken in stores for six months at Sheerness and under the impression of supplying any defects at Portsmouth Rear Admiral [Bartholomew Samuel] Rowley allowed him not a moment to repair any part of his rigging, which had never been examined since the ship was purchased; not even lifted off the mast heads.
