Folios 605-606: Thomas Hurd, Plymouth. Acknowledges the letter directing him to return to his survey of the French coast as soon as the Revenue Cutter Ranger has been refitted. Points out that the refit will have to be extensive and will delay his return. Suggests instead that he be allowed to use the gun brig HMS Conflict, which has just returned from the Inshore Squadron off Brest and is refitting in the Hamoaze. If she is intended for other duty, suggests HMS Haughty, as either of these would be better than the cutter, which because of her design is particularly vulnerable to capsizing if she should touch the ground off the Ushant Islands [Iles de Ouessant] where the tides are very strong. None of this is intended to reflect on the commander of the Ranger, Captain Frazer.
