Description

Folios 523-524: Henry Hope, HMS Espoir, Spithead. Reports that he escorted the Oporto convoy safely to their destination, but as there were no ships ready for the return journey he has returned to Spithead. Encloses copies of two sets of orders from Rear Admiral Eliab Harvey off Cape Finisterre, another set of orders received from Captain George Ralph Collier of HMS Minerva off Oporto and [not present] a copy of his log.

Folios 525-526: enclosure with folios 523-524. Copy of orders from Rear Admiral Eliab Harvey, HMS Tonnant, off Finisterre, 30 May 1806, to Commander Henry Hope, HMS Espoir. As he is returning from Oporto to England without a convoy, directs him to detour to Ushant to carry despatches to Admiral the Earl St Vincent, commander of the Channel Fleet. If the Admiral is not on that station they should be delivered to any other ship which could carry them to him. Counter-signed by Richard Bromley on behalf of the Admiral.

Folios 527-528: enclosure with folios 523-524. Copy of orders from Rear Admiral Eliab Harvey, HMS Tonnant, off Finisterre, 15 May 1806, to Commander Henry Hope, HMS Espoir. Once he has seen his convoy into Oporto, he is ordered to take the 10 ships which joined him off Falmouth and escort them to Lisbon. Once they are safely into the River Tagus, he should return to Oporto in order to take a convoy back to England. Counter-signed by Richard Bromley on behalf of the Admiral.

Folios 529-530: enclosure with folios 523-524. Copy of orders from Captain George Ralph Collier, HMS Minerva, off Oporto, 18 May 1806, to Commander Henry Hope, HMS L'Espoir. Because he has received information about privateers operating off Oporto, orders him to wait until the vessels in his convoy are safely across the bar, and then to try to overtake the Minerva in order to take charge of vessels bound for Lisbon.
