Description

Folios 272-273: Edward Hawker, HMS Tartar, Bermuda. Reports his arrival, having been ordered by Commodore John Poo Beresford to escort the cutters Bacchus, Adonis and Cassandra to Bermuda so that they can be convoyed to England by HMS Anson. He finds that the Anson and HMS Arethusa have sailed for the West Indies, and since it would take some time to communicate with the Commodore at Halifax, he has put two of them in the charge of HMS Echo, which put in at Bermuda after developing a leak and parting from the homeward-bound Jamaica convoy, and ordered the Echo's captain to take them to Plymouth. As HMS Heron is also in port with orders to take one of the cutters to Newfoundland, he has directed her to take the Adonis. Captain Bristance has left orders for HMS Tourterelle on her arrival.

Folio 274: enclosed with folios 272-273. Orders dated 5 July 1806 from Commodore John Poo Beresford, Commander in Chief, HMS Halifax, Halifax, to Captain Edward Hawker, HMS Tartar. He is ordered to escort the cutters Cassandra, Adonis and Bacchus to Bermuda so that HMS Anson can convoy them to England. Captain Hawker is then to collect any men belonging to the squadron and return to Halifax.
