Folios 194-195: William Hargood, HMS Belleisle, off the Capes of Virginia. Reports that the previous day off Cape Henry, in company with HMS Melampus and HMS Bellona as he tried to join Rear Admiral Sir Richard Strachan, he sighted a line of battle ship under jury rig steering for the River Chesapeake. When he gave chase, the enemy vessel stood in for the land and eventually ran onto the shore near Middle Sand Hill, 10 leagues south of Cape Henry. As the crew were taking to the land, he sent in boats to take possession of the ship, the Impétueux of 74 guns, Capitaine de Vaisseau Albin Joseph le Veyer de Belair. She was one of the French squadron under Rear Admiral Jean Baptiste Phillibert Willaumez, otherwise comprising the Foudroyant, 80 guns, Patriot, 74, Éole, 74, Cassard, 74, and the frigate Valoreuse, but the Impétueux had become separated from them during the gale of 18 and 19 August and lost her masts, bowsprit and rudder. When a suspicious vessel appeared on the horizon, Captain Hargood got under way with the Bellona and ordered Captain Stephen Poyntz of the Melampus to rescue any remaining crew and then burn the ship.
Folios 196-197. Duplicate of Folios 194-195.
Folios 198-199: enclosed with folios 194-195. Copy of a report from Vice Admiral George Cranfield Berkeley, Commander in Chief, North America, on the state of the French squadron under Admiral Jean Baptiste Phillibert Guillaumez [Willaumez] , 30 September, 1806. Details the damage to nine different vessels during the gale of 18 and 19 August, some still at sea and some which had come in to Annapolis or Norfolk on the River Chesapeake or to the River Delaware. One of the squadron, the Véteran, 74 guns, was commanded by Capitaine Jérôme Buonaparte.
