Folios 306-307: William Johnstone Hope [William Hope] Hopetoun House near Edinburgh.
Asks to be relieved of an imprest against his pay because of the lack of vouchers for stores purchased, caulking performed and other work done to the squadron when he was senior officer at Malta. The vouchers were made out at the time and sent to the Navy Board on HMS Swiftsure when subsequently she was captured and all his papers lost. He expresses his annoyance at being disbelieved and stresses how important the work carried out in Malta was for the troop ships that arrived every Saturday. Without it the expedition to Egypt would have been delayed by a month longer. The Maltese had been plundered by the French and had lost trust in the Royal Navy.
