Description

Folios 283-284: Robert Honeyman, HMS Leda, Spithead. States that he has previously asked for copies of the official letter of the late Captain Stephen George Church with the reply from the Admiralty. Lieutenant David Cree, late of HMS Topaze, was wounded in one if that ship's boats and the certificate cannot be found. Refers to enclosed surgeon's certificate and states that Cree always performed his duty although using a crutch because of an open wound. Cree has served twenty three years, nine as a lieutenant.

Folios 285-286: enclosure with folios 283-284. Signed by Charles Dods, surgeon, dated 15 July 1800, certifying that Cree was received into the Royal Hospital at Haslar on 22 May 1800 with a gunshot wound inflicted when boarding the enemy. He provides details of the operation to remove the ball and states that the officer will be lame for the rest of his life. Cree cheerfully rejoined HMS Leda although he had to be carried from his bed to the ship on 15 July 1800.

Folios 287-288: enclosure with folios 283-284. Letter dated 22 November 1802 by F Conninn, surgeon, HMS Topaze in the Downs. Certifies that David Cree's wound was inflicted when capturing the French armed lugger the Crescent and describes the wound and the methods used to try to improve the situation in spite of much pain and inflamation. A second slightly shorter version of the letter is given.
