Description

Folios 214-215: Henry Hill, HMS Orpheus, Spithead. Reports his arrival with four of the convoy that sailed with him from Quebec. Refers to the enclosed journal showing his late arrival at the Isle of Bic which prevented him from cruising the Gulf of St Lawrence. He arrived at Quebec on 13 October 1803 and arranged for the convoy to leave for England but bad weather prevented them from leaving with nineteen sail until 7 November 1803. He explains why he arrived home with three or four ships.

Folio 216: enclosure with folios 214-215. Letter dated 29 September 1803 by Henry Hill, HMS Orpheus off the Isle of Bec. Reports his arrival intending to take a convoy to England leaving on 30 September but he postpone departure until 28 October 1803.

Folio 217: enclosure with folios 214-215. Letter dated 8 October 1803 by Robert Shore Milnes, Castle of St Lewis, Quebec, writes to Henry Hill of HMS Orpheus having received a letter and despatch from him by Lieutenant Blennerhasset. He distributed information contained in the message to merchants in Quebec and Montreal and those people have written to ask for alterations to the arrangements. He reports that several are imprisoned on charges of theft and are sentenced to death and describes two of whom might be useful as sailors in the Service if pardoned.

Folios 219-220: enclosure with folios 214-215. Signed by nineteen merchants dated Montreal 8 October 1803 addressed to Sir Robert Shore Milnes, Lieutenant Governor of Lower Canada the letter states that information was received from Thomas Scott, Collector of Customs at Quebec that a convoy will leave on 28 October 1803 after instruction are given at the Montreal anchorage. They make it clear that the rendezvous should take place at Quebec and that the departure might be delayed. They value the cargoes of fur and other items at over £300,000 and state that their insurance covers them from there.

Folios 221-222: enclosure with folios 214-215. Letter dated 10 October 1803 by Robert Milnes, Quebec, to Henry Hill referring to a further enclosed letter from the merchants of Montreal.

Folios 223-224: enclosure with folios 214-215. Signed by fourteen merchants on behalf of those from Montreal they describe the difficulties arising from Henry Hill's proposed arrangements for the departure of the convoy.

Folios 225-226: enclosure with folios 214-215. A petition from Blackwoods & Peterson dated 8 October 1803, Quebec makes similar points.

Folios 227-228: enclosure with folios 214-215. An internal Admiralty note stating that orders be put in a letter from Hills and sent to Lloyds.
