Folios 484-485: Philip Hue, HMS Actaeon, Liverpool. Responding to Admiralty query of 22 September, says that William Southern has been forwarded to the Fleet aboard HMS Chapman on 12 September. Also acknowledges their letter of same date re John Rees [sic] - says this young man entered as a volunteer and is very fit for the Service, he sees no reason to discharge him.
Folios 486-487: enclosure with folios 484-485. James Spencer writes regarding John Reece, saying the young man appears not to have been at sea but had worked with an older brother in a small boat on the Mersey in order to assist his mother, a widow with 6 children. However for the past 2 years he had worked as a carpenter at Mr Baldwin's Yard, having been taken on as an errand boy out of compassion for his circumstances.
Folio 488: enclosure with folios 484-485. Birth certificate dated 28 April 1786, for John, son of William Reece, a boatman of New Quay, and Cicely, his wife.
