Description

Folios 446-447: Philip Hue, HMS Actaeon, Liverpool. He encloses a letter from the Actaeon's Master, Thomas Spurling, in which he complains of the insolence of Harrison Poole, one of the ship's company, and also complains that Hue did not punish the man. However, Hue says he had thoroughly investigated the charge of insolence and found it to be 'so frivolous' that it does not deserve their Lordships' attention. He had informed Mr Spurling of this and said though he did not feel the man deserved punishment he would reprimand him. Spurling had continued to insist on punishment, so Hue describes the incident. The jolly boat had been coming alongside the ship when it overturned, just below the ladder. No damage was done, no one was hurt, but there were several men on deck at the time, including Poole, who was heard to was heard to remark it was a pity the midshipman on the boat didn't take more care. Mr Spurling considers this comment insolent and a reflection on the officer who sent the midshipman in the boat, but Hue says the man has always been a steady, good character and he did not think he should punish him - also considers it improper of Spurling to call on their Lordships after his captain's decision.

Folios 448-449: enclosure with folios 446-447. Letter dated 29 August 1800 by Thomas Spurling, HMS Actaeon, saying having complained of Poole's insolence and Hue having refused punishment, he requests his letter to be sent to the Lords Commissioners, asking them to order a Court Martial on Harrison Poole.
