Description

Folios 438-439: Philip Hue, Responding to Admiralty query of 25 August, replies that John Owen is an Able Seaman, who says he was Master of a sloop of 35 tons from Holyhead to Liverpool, also that he belongs to the Anglesey Volunteers, but being a sailor, and in a vessel as a trader, he was impressed as being fit for HM Navy. John Lewis is a Seaman, and appears fit for the Service. With regard to his having fits, he does not seem to have suffered from them since he was brought on board the Actaeon.

Folios 440-441: enclosure with folios 438-439: Letter from James Spencer, saying an affidavit re John Lewis, who was impressed and now aboard the Actaeon, is for their Lordships to decide upon. Also asking for Michael McConwell, impressed and on Actaeon, to be considered for discharge as he is not a seaman though he has been 3 voyages to Greenland and one to America but had lost his protection the night he was impressed and wishes to know on what terms he may be freed.

Folios 442-443: enclosure with folios 438-439. Letter dated 20 August 1800 fFrom Captain Griffith of the 4th company of Anglesey Volunteers, saying one of his men, John Owen, had been impressed on 14 August and asking for his discharge.

Folios 444-445: enclosure with folios 438-439. Deposition dated 21 August 1800 from Edward and Elizabeth Yates, confectioners, also Sara Johnson, spinster, and John Smith, mariner. John Lewis is described as having been ashore for about 3 months before going to sea in the sloop Jamaica, and during that time the Yateses and Johnson had seen him suffer several violent fits in which he fell down and remained stupefied for some time - this was not due to drink, as Lewis was a sober man. John Smith said he had met Lewis at Barbados about 7 months earlier and had sailed with him aboard Jamaica and seen him suffering from severe fits. He said at one point Lewis had jumped overboard, but had been saved by a black man, and also that Lewis seemed as if 'his mental faculties were not right'.
