Description

Folios 429-430: Philip Hue, HMS Actaeon, Liverpool. Responding to Admiralty query of 25 August, says that Robert McKitrick is an Ordinary Seaman of about 20 and Hue thinks he was at sea before his indentures. Notes that the wages listed 'far exceeds' the usual amount for a first indentured apprentice. The second boy mentioned, Henry Dodd, he thinks is the one for whom his indentures were executed, and also the third, John Lovatt, although he had denied he was an apprentice.

Folios 431-432: enclosure with folios 429-430. Statement dated 21 August 1800 from Thomas Hollins, Denton, Manchester, saying that his apprentice John Lovatt had left his service and when Hollis discovered he was aboard the Actaeon he had tried to get him discharged without success. He therefore encloses the indenture [not now present] and certificate of his age and hopes the order to discharge him will be given.

Folio 433: enclosure with folios 431-432. Slip of paper certifying that John, son of William Lovatt, was baptized on 29 September 1702 at Newcastle.

Folios 434-435: enclosure with folios 431-432. Letter dated 23 August 1800 from David Matthew[?] saying his apprentice Henry Dodd had been impressed but he had been unable to get to the Rendezvous in time, went the following day to present the indenture tut was told the captain would need a directive from the Admiralty to liberate him.

Folios 436-437: enclosure with folios 431-432. Letter dated 23 August 1800 from R. Kirkpatrick, saying Richard McKitrick had been impressed about 6 days before, but that he is an apprentice only 16 years old and has never been at sea. Encloses the indenture [not now present] and asks for his discharge.
