Description

Folios 123- 124: [Charles Hamilton], HMS Melpomene, Bay Of Goree. Letter to the King of Brak (Senegal) explaining that he has taken possession of the island of Goree and plans to strengthen the garrison to make it impregnable, apologising for not having presents worthy for the King, but is sure that will be rectified as soon as the King in England hears the news, and promising to ensure traders in the commerce of Captives, Gum and Ivory are free to come and go to the Island, hoping the King will encourage his merchants to continue to bring them to this market.

Folios 125-126: enclosure with folios 123-124. Also a letter (to the King of Brak) encouraging continued efforts to expel their inveterate enemy, the French, from their settlements in Africa, explaining that he will blockade the River Senegal if the King will cut their supplies by land, to starve them into capitulation; meanwhile again encouraging his traders to bring their Captives, Gum and Ivory to the market on the Island of Goree.

Folios 127-130: enclosure with folios 123-124. Document dated 1788 in French, detailing customs to be paid annually to the poste [garrison?] of Goree.

Folios 131-132: enclosure with folios 123-124. List of the provisions and stores in the garrison of Goree on 1 April 1800.

Folios 133-134: enclosure with folios 123-124. Copy of an official letter from the Governor General of the Azores to the Governor of the Island of Fayal, regarding the Privateer Brig ' The Three Brothers'.

Folio 135: enclosure with folios 123-124. Statement of provisions now in Goree, dated April 10 1800.

Folio 136: enclosure with folios 123-124. List of defects on HMS Melpomene, dated 4 July 1800, Spithead.

Folios 137-138: enclosure with folios 123-124. Report ordered by Hamilton to survey a French Sloop, dated 22 April 1800.

Folios 139-140: enclosure with folios 123-124. Also a survey ordered by Hamilton on a French Schooner, dated 7 April 1800 and a list of provisions from the French stores taken for the use of His majesty's garrison at Goree.

Folios 141-142: enclosure with folios 123-124. Also an account of the Ordnance stores in the garrison at Goree, dated April 1800.

Folio 143: folio number nou used.
