Description

Folios 164-165: William Hotham, HMS Adamant, St Helena. He reports his arrival at St Helena on the 25 December and explains his delayed departure due to the impending arrival of a fleet of East Indiamen, possibly with new orders, from the Cape of Good Hope. These would either confirm those sent by the late Sir High Christian or give additional information to those ships that might arrive at St Helena. It was his intention to wait a week following the letter from Governor Brooke, but the arrival of the Georgiana Packet that morning without any orders or instructions confirmed his intention to proceed to the Cape of Good Hope. He states HMS Tremendous, Jupiter, Imperiose, Braave, Sphinx, Star and Hope brigs as well as the Charlotte and Cuffnells Indiamen, with the Pheonix and Alligator, extra ships from Lisbon having the 10th and 51st Regiments on board for India were left at the Cape on the 1st inst.

Folios 166-167: enclosure with folios 164-165. Robert Brook, St Helena. A letter by Robert Brook, Governor St Helena, to William Hotham. Dated 7th January 1799. He states the orders issued by Admiral Sir Hugh Christian remain undirected and that his successor Captain Losack has not mentioned the subject. He asks that Hotham consider delaying his departure as several East Indiamen are expected daily and new information my be received.
