Folios 566-568: Roddam Home, HMS Caesar, Hamoaze. Receipt of letter with letter from James ferrier enclosed, asking him to comment on the nature of the service rendered by Farmer Campbell to HMS Caesar off the island of Coll and asking how far he thinks Campbell is entitled to reward. HMS Caesar hd been driven from the coast of Ireland among the Hebrides isles during stormy weather. Describes their difficulties finding an anchorage and how they were forced to tack back and fort all night. Praises the actions of his Officers and crew. As soon as dawn broke he sent a boat on shore to find out where they were. Mr Campbell was on the shore and offered to come on board and show them the passage into the sound of Mull. He had seen their situation the day before and had come from the side of the island where he lived to give help but could not persuade anyone else to accompany him as they thought they were an enemy ship. He knew there was enough water in the strait of Mull for the ship and he took his knowledge on trust. he conducted them safely into Tobermory where they anchored within 50 yards of the rocks sheltered from the storm. Mr Campbell did not make any demand for his trouble and he thought he was perfectly happy with the certificate he was given. He believes if he was given double Pilotage of between 10 and 15 guineas it would be an inducement to other individuals to exert themselves in a similar way for the public service.
