Description

Folios 190-191: Graham Eden Hamond, HMS Champion, Yarmouth Roads. Encloses the copies of 2 letters he has written to Lord Viscount Duncan, a report of the state and condition of HMS Champion [not present] and a copy of his last orders. He will remain in the Roads until further orders.

Folios 192-193: enclosure with folios 190-191. Order dated 22 May 1799 from Lord Viscount Duncan, Admiral of the White, London, to Graham Eden Hamond, HMS Champion, by command of Admiral George Noble. Directs him to proceed immediately to the coast of Norway and cruise there for the protection of the Baltic trade taking care not to infringe on the neutrality and using his best endeavours to destroy the enemy's privateers that infect that coast. After the expiration of the time he is to go to Leith Roads and remain there till further notice. Warns him that 2 old Dutch 50-gun ships and 5 frigates sailed about 15 March [1799] from Surinam laden with produce from that colony and bound for the Porte off Holland.

Folios 194-195: enclosure with folios 190-191. Letter dated 30 June 1799 from Graham Eden Hamond, HMS Champion, Yarmouth Roads, to Lord Duncan. On the morning of 26 [June 1799] off Dudgeon on his return from the coast of Norway a brig was observed boarding 2 merchant vessels. After a chase of 3 days and 2 nights he captured the Anacreon French privateer commanded by Citoyen Blanckeman belonging to Dunkirk. She has 16 guns and 125 men, 74 of whom were away in prizes. She is almost a new vessel, sails very fast, is copper bottomed and fit for service. He is very pleased with this capture as she had been a great annoyance to the trade on the Northern Coast, having taken nearly 30 valuable merchant vessels in the past year.

Folios 196-197: enclosure with folios 190-191.Letter dated 30 June 1799 by Graham Eden Hamond, HMS Champion, Yarmouth Roads, to Lord Duncan. reports his arrival. He returned so soon having found his rudder sprung on 20 June [1799]. His Carpenter reported that it was rotten. On the advice of his 1st Lieutenant they agreed it was dangerous to continue to cruise so he proceeded for Leith as directed by his orders but because of the wind he thought it advisable to bear up to the Roads. On 26 [June 1799] off Dudgeon he fell in withe the Anacreon French privateer and could not miss the opportunity to take her as reported in his other letter. he hopes his actions will be approved of. Encloses the state and condition of the ship and a journal of proceedings since the ship's departure from Cuxhaven on 3 [June 1799] [not present].
