Folios 157-158: Charles Hamilton, HMS Melpomene, Spithead. If the Admiralty wishes to prosecute the Master of the Hercules for inattention he is ready. By mistake a journal was sent instead of a copy of the ship's log which will be sent by tomorrow's post. This will show that he made the signal to weigh at day light and that the Hercules did not get out till 3 p.m. Explains the actions he took to show the Hercules where he intended to go. Next Morning he made North Foreland but did not see the Hercules despite waiting for him. The man's remissness is clear when compared with the attention shown by the Latona. He does not shrink from a misconduct enquiry but as the ship has arrived safely he has no desire to prosecute the Master unless it is necessary to exculpate himself from blame.
Folios 159-160: enclosure with folios 150-151. Copy of log of HMS Melpomene for 7 to 9 December 1799.
