Folios 132-133: Charles Hamilton, HMS Melpomene. Encloses a letter from Captain Legge [not present] who reconnoitred Brest yesterday. He has received and sent to Lord Bridport a French letter rom Sir Harry Neale which he found in a vessel he had captured relating to the movements at Brest. It can be translated to say that there are 15 ships of the line in Brest Roads and 12 more in port ready to go into the Roads. The Master of the vessel confirmed that 4 of the later had already left to port before he sailed and that 3,000 or 4,000 troops had arrived from Toulon and the out ports. The letter was dated Brest 1st Ventore (sp?) . The St Fiorenza had already chased a convoy of 2 square rigged vessels protected by a frigate and 2 brigs into Bellisle and wished for reinforcements in case they put to sea again. On 28 [February 1799] he captured Le Zele, a privateer of 16 guns and 69 men and chased his prize, an English brig., on shore near the Penmarks (sp?).
