Description

Folios 262-263: John Holloway, Spithead. Reply to your note yesterday respecting a Forty Pound Bank Note of William Croaker and he encloses the correspondence between you and him upon that business.

Folio 264: enclosure with folios 262-263. Letter dated 25 February 1798 by John Holloway, HMS Duke, Portsmouth Harbour, to the Admiralty. Covering letter with the enclosed [not present] letter from Captain Whyte [White], Regulating Officer at Liverpool & also a Bank note [not present] for Forty Pounds which was left as a Security for William Croaker a Seaman belonging to HMS Duke who was given leave of absence. He has since heard that he entered on board a ship bound to the coast of Guinea & was afterwards impressed by one of our Frigates in the West Indies. [Verso] Admiralty Office. To Captain [John] Holloway, HMS Duke, Portsmouth. Dated 6 March 1798. Having laid before the Admiralty your letter dated 25 February 1798 sent with a letter you received from Captain Whyte [White] the Regulating Officer at Liverpool enclosing a Bank note for forty pounds. He is commanded to inform that they have sent the note to the Navy Board with directions for them to pay the same into the Hands of the Treasury of the Navy.
