Description

Folios 259-260: John Holloway, HMS Duke, Portsmouth Harbour. He has received the enclosed letter from William White, Regulating Officer, Liverpool, along with a Bank note for Forty Pounds which was left as security for William Croaker a Seaman belonging to HMS Duke, to whom he had given a leave of absence to see his friends. He understand he was afraid to return since his leave expired. He has since heard that he entered on board a ship bound to the coast of Guinea & was afterwards impressed by one of our Frigates in the West Indies.

Folio 261: enclosure with folios 259-260. Letter dated 8 February 1798 by William White, Regulating Officer, Liverpool, to John Holloway, HMS Duke, Portsmouth. Reply to letter dated 14 February 1798 acknowledging his letter dated 22 January 1798 respecting the legality of a Forty pound Draft deposited in your hands as security or the return of William Croaker a Seaman, who it appears by your letter has not returned to HMS Duke. As requested he encloses [not present] a Bank of England Note Value Fifty Pounds No 3633 Dated 25 July 1797 and request you acknowledge receipt.
