Folios 175-176: Richard Hill, HMS Tromp, Dublin Bay. Report that on the 7 July 1798 he was acquainted with the Lord Lieutenant had informed that there were several Revenue Cutters coming from Scotland which he should put under his command for the purpose of assisting in examining vessels etc. On 9 July he received a letter from Lord Castereagh [Robert Stewart, 2nd Marquess of Londonderry] (copy enclosed) on receipt of this he waited upon His Excellency the Lord Lieutenant who informed him that he wished to send both of the ships to Scotland but that the exigency of the moment obliged him to keep one here , which he hoped with the assistance of the Revenue Vessels would answer every purpose. He thought it his duty to sent HMS Europa to England and to remain here in HMS Tromp until further orders. He reports that most of the Roads lined with lined with His Majesty's forces the rebels use every endeavour to move to different parts by water. He has received their letter dated 2 July 1798 informing him of the appointment of Mr James Murphy to be Boatswain of HMS Tromp. He recommends James Collins who was Boatswain's Mate of HMS Duke and has been Boatswain's Mate for nearly the whole of his time on HMS Tromp. He also acknowledges receipt of your letter dated 3 July 1798 informing of the appointment of Mr Charles Ross to be Purser of HMS Tromp. Mr Stephens has not yet joined from Waterford. There has only two of the Revenue Cutters joined as yet, one of which at the Lord Lieutenants desire has been sent to attend General Lake at Arklow, the other shall be sent to secure the Coast to the southward as soon as she is repaired. He sends HMS Tromp's Boats, properly armed, with an Officer in each along the shore every night.
Folio 177: enclosure with folios 175-176. Letter dated 9 July 1798 by [Lord] Castlereagh [Robert Stewart, 2nd Marquess of Londonderry], Dublin Castle to Richard Hill, HMS Tromp. Mr Wickham under Secretary of State in England having sent me a Copy of a Letter he received from Mr Nepean Secretary to the Lord Commissioners of the Admiralty proposing that HMS Tromp and HMS Europa now in Dublin Harbour should be sent back to England. Request that one of these vessels remain.
