Description

Folios 155-156: Richard Hill, HMS Tromp, Needles Passage near Lymington. Reports that on Monday last at the request of Major General [George] Don they meet at Freshwaters Gate and accompanied him along the Coast within the Needles; where he intends to erect Batteries; and yesterday, being the first day of heavy Gales would admit of it. he rounded the passage of the Needles to find out a place where HMS Tromp can be anchored in safety and so as to cooperate with the Land Batteries. HMS Fury and HMS Terror Gun Vessels anchored in Allum [Alum] Bay yesterday; the weather not allowing them to get thereto before. HMS Ferret has been anchored in the adjoining Bay/Totland [Bay] some time and situated so as to command the Needles point. [Details of the situation]. Observe that Lieutenant [John] Bryant who is in Haslar Hospital with Rheumatism and Epileptic Fits with little probability of him returning. Request another be appointed to replace him.

Folio 157: enclosure with folios 155-156. Letter dated 17 May 1798 by Lieutenant Richard Horsley, HMS Terror, to Captain Richard Hill, HMS Tromp, off Pennington Lake. HMS Terror being in the course of Pay since 1 March 1798 and having received a letter informing that the Pay Books are sent to Portsmouth and the people being in want of clothing. Request permission to proceed to Portsmouth.

Folio 158: enclosure with folios 155-156. Letter dated 17 May 1798 Lieutenant Richard Horsley, HMS Terror, to Captain Richard Hill, HMS Tromp, off Pennington Lake. Report on the damage caused to HMS Terror in the recent Gales and requesting a Survey.
