Folios 54-55: Edward Hawker, HMS Lord Mulgrave, Spithead. Reports joining HMS Lord Mulgrave at Cowes on 4 September 1798. and has sent the enclosed copy of the order received from Captain Edward Williams and have proceeded to Spithead on 5 September 1798 as the ship requires to be Victualled, the Ships Company paid their Wages and sundry Boatswain's and Gunner's Stores wanted.
Folios 56-57: enclosures with folios 54-55. Orders dated 1 December 1798 by theOffice of Lord High Admiral of Great Britain and Ireland etc, to John Smith, HMS Lord Mulgrave, Hull. Orders to go to Kingroad Bristol and make known to the Master of Merchants Hall at Bristol that you are under orders to attend the Trade of Bristol and to be governed by the Principal Merchants. You are then to cruise for the protection of the Trade and the annoyance of the Enemy on such Station as the Principal Merchants point out to take or destroy all Ships & Vessels belonging to France & French Subjects or to the United Provinces of Holland. [Total of three sides].
