Folios 203-204: Lawrence William Halstead, HMS Phoenix, Plymouth Sound. Apologises for writing, but is anxious to get his ship fit for sailing. Since yesterday's letter, sent on his arrival, he has been informed by Admiral Sir Richard King that HMS Phoenix must refit in Plymouth Sound. Although he had not wanted to go into harbour, it appears that in her current state she will be got ready much sooner by refitting in the harbour rather than in the Sound. There is decay in the Topmast rigging and the Bowsprit, the foreyard is sprung, and there is other work needed, including caulking inside and out. Men will need to be sent out to fit the rigging, and at this time of the year that will add to the time taken,. He therefore requests an order to go into harbour.
