Description

Folios 194-195: Lawrence William Halstead, HMS Phoenix, Milford Haven. Reports his arrival, having seen the Bristol West Indiamen safely to Cork on 26 December [1797], and from there sailing towards the Scilly Islands, where he recaptured the Endeavour Snow from Newfoundland, which was one of the ships under the convoy of HMS Venus. It had become parted with many others in gales some time earlier. The Endeavour had been taken about 10 hours before that by the French Privateer The Enterprize, about 4 days from Brest. No other vessels were captured by her. The recaptured vessel was towed to the north of the Scillies, because of the state of the Newfoundland convoy and the probability of her meeting more french Privateers. Despite his efforts to protect her and the rest of the convoy, he was unable to keep sight of her. He is well aware that he has exceeded his limits by such cruising, but hopes his motives are clear. Encloses the journal of his voyage and the state and condition report of his vessel [neither present].

Folio 196: enclosure with folios 194-195. List of vessels under convoy of HMS Phoenix, Captain Lawrence William Halstead, bound to Cork, November and December 1797.
