Folios 170-171: Michael Halliday, HMS Woolwich, Spithead. Reports he has received a letter from Lieutenant Jonathon Williams, of who he wrote on 6 September. His truly distressing situation induces Captain Halliday to intercede on his behalf. His letter was addressed to Captain Halliday at Longreach, describing how he had great difficulty receiving his pay for various ships. On joining HMS Woolwich he was entirely destitute, and had just been released from imprisonment for debt. There is no doubt that these circumstances must have led to his erratic behaviour. He is now reported to be on his way to rejoin the ship. Wishes to know how he should handle his return, if he arrives before Lieutenant Jonathon Lewis whose appointment was notified on 7 September.
